Sweet Briar’s cross country club traveled to Farmville on Saturday, Sept. 15 for the Longwood University Cross Country Invitational. Held at Longwood’s golf course, the meet also included teams from Liberty University, Longwood University and Campbell University.
As several of its members were under the weather or fulfilling other obligations, the Sweet Briar squad was small in number. However, Anna Edwards ’10 and Laura Gandy ’07 had good races and both ran times that were an improvement over previous events.
Edwards finished 29th place overall with a time of 27:34 for the 3.1-mile course. This was a nearly three-minute improvement over her last race at this distance, a scrimmage against Randolph College on Aug. 27.
Edwards’ minutes-per-mile pace was 8:55, nearly a minute faster than the 9:50 pace she ran at Randolph.
Gandy finished 30th with a time of 30:02. It was her first race at the 3.1-mile distance, but her minutes-per-mile pace was a 15 second improvement over the time she ran last weekend on Washington & Lee’s 3.7-mile course.
On Oct. 6, the club will travel to Penn Laird, Va., for the Virginia Division II/III College Cross Country Championship. The race starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Peaks View Cross Country Course at Burtner Farm.
