Sweet Briar hockey was back in action Sunday playing host to conference-foe Virginia Wesleyan College. The Marlins spoiled the Vixens’ return, however, putting three on the board to hand Sweet Briar its third loss of the season, 3-0.
Strong defensive play from the Vixens and senior goalie Cat Cox (Prince Frederick, Md./Calverton) held the game scoreless through the first 26 minutes of play until Virginia Wesleyan’s Meredith Willett found the back of the cage with an unassisted shot at 26:14. Cox turned back 11 shots in the first half and Rebecca Olander ’09 (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) picked up a crucial defensive save to keep the Marlin lead at 1-0 going into halftime.
The Marlins added another field goal in the second frame and a penalty stroke goal with 10 minutes remaining for the 3-0 win. Despite surrendering 14 penalty corners to the Marlins, the Vixen defense did not allow a goal off a corner in the game. Cox finished with 19 saves in the cage for Sweet Briar.
The Vixens are home again on Tuesday. They take on Roanoke College at 4:30 p.m.
