Sweet Briar field hockey got its first taste of overtime action Friday afternoon, nudging visiting Saint Vincent College 2-1 in the Vixens’ season opener. The winning goal came off the stick of sophomore Melissa Carron (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) with 3:31 to play in the first overtime period. First-year Erika Magee (Petersburg, Va./Prince George) picked up the assist as the pair teamed up for their second goal of the game.
Magee tied the game in the first half off a feeder from Carron, answering Saint Vincent’s Maryellen Baverso who put the Bearcats ahead 1-0 at the 10-minute mark.
Neither team could scrap across a goal in the final frame, sending the game into the extra period. With minutes remaining in the extra period, Magee received a pass at midfield, carried it downfield, and dished the ball to Carron who pushed it passed the goalie and into the cage for Sweet Briar’s first win of the season.
The Vixens look to start 2007 2-0 tomorrow, hosting Sewanee at 12 p.m.
