SWEET BRIAR – Julie Sellers' '07 (Virginia Beach,VA/Norfolk Academy) free-position goal with 29 seconds remaining broke a 12-12 tie Wednesday evening and gave Sweet Briar lacrosse a 13-12 win over visiting Methodist University.
After alternating goals with the Monarchs for most of the first half, the Vixens finally pulled ahead 9-5 by netting four unanswered goals to end the half. Methodist staged a comeback in the second half, as the Monarchs scored four unanswered goals of their own in the first 10 minutes to tie the game at 10-all.
Each time the Vixens tried to pull ahead down the stretch Methodist answered. The two teams swapped goals with 7:49 to play which tied the game at 11-11. Sellers then put Sweet Briar ahead 12-11 on an unassisted goal, but Methodist found the net once again to tie the game at 12-12 at the five-minute mark. Then with 29 seconds on the clock, Sellers was awarded a free-position shot and put the ball in the back of the net for the win.
Sellers finished with four goals, as did Ellie Donahue '08 (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal). Megan Behrle '09 (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson) and Meredith Newman '09 (Charlottesville, VA/Tandem) each picked up three assists.
Sweet Briar, 4-11 overall on the season, travels to Roanoke for a make-up game of the March 28 contest that was rained out.
