On Saturday, April 21, Sweet Briar’s engineering students will trade their slide rules for water hoses, when they raise money for a trip to Central America.
The fundraiser will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 21 at Family Cleaners, located at 4568 South Amherst Highway (Business 29) in Madison Heights.
A minimum donation of $5 per car is requested.
The students are part of an interdisciplinary course called Technology and Society: A Global Perspective. In May, eight students will travel to a boarding school in the mountains of Guatemala, where they’ve committed to build concrete enclosures, called spring boxes, to secure two natural springs.
The group also hopes to complete a concrete water storage tank and connect it to the spring boxes by a submersible pump. The goal is to help provide access to clean running water for the 64 students who attend the school.
Students have been busy working on a prototype this spring and are eager to help. “This will have a wonderful impact on these people and their way of life, and we are all excited to be doing this for them,” said SBC senior Kim Battad, head of fundraising for the project.
