Sweet Briar softball plated two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday to push game one into extra innings before falling 7-4 to visiting Bridgewater College. Bridgewater, currently ranked #24, also captured game two by a 15-3 score.
Down 2-0 in the sixth inning, Krystal Ellis '08 (Rustburg, VA/Rustburg) came to bat with two outs and bases empty. She singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by the leftfielder. Meagan Chenault '07 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) then singled to bring home Ellis followed by Beth Anderson's (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) double which brought home Chenault to tie the game at 2-2.
After neither team was able to push a run across in the seventh, game one went into extra innings. In the eighth, Sweet Briar spotted the Eagles five runs in the top half of the inning before plating two themselves, falling by a final score of 7-4.
Bridgewater (32-4, 15-1) brought its bats in game two, scoring three runs in the first and sixth in both the second and third innings to capture the 15-3 win. Junior Laura Barry hit two home runs for Bridgewater as the Eagles picked up 15 hits.
Chenault, playing in her final game on campus, went a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Anderson knocked in Sweet Briar's other run with a RBI single in the fifth inning.
This afternoon's twin bill was also the last home game for senior Lynnsey Brown. The Vixens travel to Salem on Wednesday to face Emory & Henry College at the Moyer Sports Complex at 6 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for last Sunday but was postponed due to the rain.
