Visiting Guilford College doubled up host Sweet Briar College in the rain Wednesday, taking the conference match up 16-8 to drop the Vixens season mark to 3-10.
Sweet Briar stayed with the Quakers through the first 30 minutes of play, going into the break down 7-4 thanks to goals from Meredith Newman '09 (Charlottesville, VA/Tandem) and Julie Sellers '07 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) in the final five minutes of the half. The Quakers, however, pulled away with five unanswered goals to start the second half and went on to net nine total goals in the half for the win.
Sellers finished with a team-best four goals. Newman was a close second with three goals in the game. Vixen goalie Emily Fitzpatrick '07 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) stopped 14 Quakers shots to up her season total to 177, passing her previous career-high season mark of 166.
Mary Hutchins netted four goals and assisted another to lead Guilford (7-7, 4-3) in the game.
Sweet Briar travels to Bridgewater College on Saturday to face the Eagles at 1 p.m.
