The 17th-ranked Roanoke College Maroons swept Sunday's softball doubleheader at Sweet Briar College, handing the Vixens 6-0 and 8-0 losses in the twinbill. The losses drop Sweet Briar's overall record to 12-16, while the Maroons improve to 19-3 on the season.
Runs were hard to come by for both teams early in game one as Roanoke held on to a slim 2-0 lead through the first five innings before pushing three across in the sixth and an insurance run in the seventh.
Vixen Krystal Ellis '08 (Rustburg, VA/Rustburg) picked up two of Sweet Briar's three hits in the game, including a leadoff double in the seventh inning.
Game two saw Roanoke's bats come to life. The Maroons plated five runs on five hits and one error in the second and then added three runs in the fourth. Hillary Hudgins was 3-for-3 in the second game for Roanoke to finish the doubleheader 6-for-6 with four runs scored and four RBIs. Lyndsi Craig pitched five innings for the one-hit shutout.
Ellis provided the Vixens' lone hit in game two on a first-inning single to left field. She finished the day 3-for-5.
Sweet Briar travels to Eastern Mennonite University Tuesday for a 3 p.m. conference doubleheader.
