Sweet Briar tennis came up on the short end of a 5-4 match Saturday as visiting Guilford College picked up three wins in singles to take the conference match. The loss moves the Vixens' season record 2-5, while Guilford improves to 8-3.
After a long rain delay, Sweet Briar took two of the three doubles matches thanks to a 9-7 win from Virginia Edahl '10 (Charlotte, NC/Providence) and Blair Blincoe '10 (Vienna, VA/Norfolk Academy) at #1 and a 9-8 (7-3) win at #2 doubles from the Vixen team of Molly McGonegle '10 (Virginia Beach, VA/Floyd Kellam) and Shannon Schalestock '09 (Casanova, VA/Highland School).
Off their victory in doubles, partners Edahl and Blincoe each captured wins in singles. Edahl defeated Nika Botkin at #1 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-2, while Blincoe took her match at #2 6-3,6-4 to push the Vixens to four wins in the match.
Guilford, however, swept singles matches three through six to pull out the close win. Schalestock and Guilford's Hilary Routon battled in the #4 match, with Routon taking the closely contested match 0-6,6-4,(10-5).
Sweet Briar returns to actions Monday as the Vixens host Randolph-Macon College at 4 p.m.
