HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Vixens fenced at the top of their game on Sunday at the Virginia Intercollegiate Fencing Championship with sophomore Kaelyn Leake (Sebastopol, CA) taking the silver medal in foil. Leake came out of pool competition ranked first and then was just out touched by JMU's Nicole Halbert 14-15 in the final. Her finish was the highest for a Sweet Briar fencer since 2001, and the best ever for SBC in foil.
Jessica Pilgrim also took fifth in foil.
Lori Ringrose '09 (San Diego, CA) fought her way through a cold to take seventh in sabre. Sophomore Cheryl Seaver (Burtonsville, MD) took third in epee, losing to eventual champion Anja Stickley of Mary Baldwin. Seaver, who first picked up a sword in October 2005, took the third place fence off 15-9 over UVA's Leah Turner.
Coach Chris Beazley was pleased at the results, with the Vixens finishing fifth overall behind JMU, MAry Baldwin, UVA and Virginia Tech.
