The final performance in this year’s Janet Lowrey Gager Community Concert Series will be held at noon Tuesday, March 27, in Sweet Briar’s Memorial Chapel.
The program will feature the music of France performed on a variety of instruments by Sweet Briar musicians. Works by Francis Poulenc, Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saens, Charles Gounod and F.J. Naderman will be included.
Frank Archer, the conductor of Sweet Briar’s College Choir, will accompany his wife, Mary Ann, on Poulenc’s “Flute Sonata.” Harpist Virginia Schweninger will play several French works, including a Debussy prelude with flutist Lynn Buck, who is the wife of Dean Jonathan Green.
Professor of music Rebecca McCord and one of her students, Kathryn Whittemore ’08, will play a four-hand excerpt from Gounod’s opera, “Faust.” Soprano Marcia Jones Thom will join them to sing “The Jewel Song” from “Faust.” Oboist Scott Perry will be joined by McCord in performing Saint-Saens’ “Sonata for Oboe.”
The lunchtime series presents music from around the world. It is free and open to the public, and audience members are invited to bring a lunch to enjoy during the 50-minute concerts.
Students can order sandwiches and drinks in advance by contacting McCord at 381-6115 or

The Gager series is made possible by the support of Forrest Gager, in memory of his wife Janet, who served as Sweet Briar’s director of public relations.
