FERRUM — Sophomore Meredith Newman’s (Charlottesville, VA/Tandem) six goals helped lead Sweet Briar lacrosse to its first victory of the season Tuesday. The Vixens defeated host Ferrum College by a score of 15-11 to improve their season record to 1-6.

Sweet Briar led 7-3 at the half with four different players scoring on the attack. Ellie Donahue ’08 (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) led the offense with three tallies in the half, followed by two from senior Julie Sellers (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy).

The Vixens matched and surpassed their first-half goal total in the second, scoring eight goals. Five of Newman’s six goals came in the half. Megan Behrle ’08 (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson) picked up six assists while senior goalie Emily Fitzpatrick (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) turned back nine shots to help lead the Vixens to their first win.

Sweet Briar returns home to take on Randolph-Macon College Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
