MYRTLE BEACH, SC — The Sweet Briar College Vixens started a two-out rally in the top half of the seventh inning Thursday against Villa Julie, but could not bring the tying run home. The Vixens fell 5-4 in the game, which concluded play in Myrtle Beach.
Down 5-2 in the seventh, Sweet Briar brought eight hitters to the plate. The inning started with a hit batsman and two fielder’s choices, before senior Meagan Chenault (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) came to the plate with two outs. Chenault knocked a clutch single to left center to start the two-out rally. Krystal Ellis ’08 (Rustburg, VA/Rustburg) followed with a single to load the bases. Meagan Bell ’09 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) then singled to left, bringing home the Vixens’ third run.
A bases-loaded walk from Beth Anderson ’08 (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) brought in Chenault and pulled Sweet Briar within one run of the tie at 5-4. But the Vixens’ late-inning comeback would come up short, as the inning ended with a fly out to right field.
Sweet Briar started the day with a tough 6-2 loss to the University of Charleston, Melissa Viar ’09 (Madison Heights, VA/Madison Heights) went 2-for-3 and scored a run against a very strong Golden Eagles pitcher. Both Vixen runs came via Ellis’ bat.
Thursday was the last day of softball for Sweet Briar in Myrtle Beach. The Vixens return to begin conference play this week at Randolph-Macon College.
