MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Vixen softball kicked off play in the Snowbird Tournament Monday, splitting its first two contests. Game one pitted Sweet Briar against Alvernia College, with the Crusaders coming out on top in extra innings by a score of 10-9.
Senior Meagan Chenault’s (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) sacrifice fly in the home half of the sixth tied the game for the Vixens at 6-6. After allowing another Crusader runner to cross the plate in the seventh, first-year Blair Mullally (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) doubled bringing home Meagan Bell ’09 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) for the tying run. In extra innings, Alvernia once again jumped out to a lead in its half of the eighth inning, but this time the Vixen comeback came up short, as Sweet Briar fell 10-9.
Sweet Briar rebounded in its second game, taking its contest with Gordon College by a score of 11-1. Krystal Ellis ’08 (Rustburg, VA/Rustburg) led the Vixen offense with a home run and a triple. She went 2-for-4 against the Fighting Scots with two runs scored and five RBIs. Pitcher Becca Almond ’10 (Spout Spring, VA/Appomattox) picked up the win.
The Vixens are back in action Tuesday, facing Gettysburg College and Iowa Wesleyan College.
