Vixen softball battled the cold weather Sunday to sweep a home doubleheader with non-conference Meredith College. Sweet Briar took the two games by scores of 16-6 and 16-4 to improve its record to 3-1 on the young season.
Tied 4-4 in the fifth inning of game one, Sweet Briar put four runs on the board on five hits to jump out to the 8-4 lead before adding eight insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Krystal Ellis ’08 (Rustburg, VA/Rustburg) led the way in the sixth inning, launching the game-winning grand slam home run.
The bats stayed hot in game two as Sweet Briar scored 11 runs in the first two innings, helped by seven hits, including a three-run home run from Meagan Bell ’09 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County). The Vixens went on to score five more runs in the next half-inning for the decisive win.
Ellis and Bell each finished with seven RBIs apiece. Senior Meagan Chenault (Amherst, VA/Amherst) led the way in hits with six. Several Vixens scored five runs in the two games.
On the mound, first-year Nikki Taylor (Wendell, NC/East Wake) improved to 2-0 while Becca Almond ’10 (Stout Spring, VA/Appomattox Co.) picked up her first collegiate win.
Sweet Briar is back at home next Sunday, taking on Peace College at 1 p.m.
