The Bank of the James has joined Sweet Briar College Friends of Athletics as a gold partner and will serve as the premier sponsor for this year’s Bank of the James Friends of Athletics Golf Tournament to be held May 4 at the Poplar Grove Golf Club.
Brenda P. Gray, Vice President and Business Development Officer for Bank of the James comments, “We are excited to serve as the sponsor for this event. With the recent opening of our new and beautiful office on Main Street in Amherst, this partnership between Bank of the James and Sweet Briar College was a good match. We are looking forward to serving the people of Amherst County and invite the community to stop by and meet our Amherst staff. We are excited to now have a presence right in the heart of Amherst and thank Sweet Briar College for this opportunity to be a part of such an important fundraiser for Sweet Briar College Friends of Athletics."
Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Sweet Briar College athletic program.
“Vixen Athletics is thrilled that Bank of the James has come on board with our flagship event. It shows their commitment to the community and to women in sport," says Paul Shaw, Sweet Briar head soccer coach and tournament organizer.
This May marks the third year Friends of Athletics has hosted the captain’s choice tournament, which will once again feature "beat the pro" competition and a putting contest.
Golfers can enter as individuals or as a team of four. Registration fees are $150 for individuals and $550 for teams. Fees include golf, cart, boxed lunch, social, prizes, and Friends of Athletics membership.
Eagle and Birdie partnerships are still available. Eagle partners receive free entry of one team (4 players) into the tournament. Both partnerships will have their logos displayed on golf carts’ GPS screens as golfers approach the sponsored tee.
Tournament play begins May 4 at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. A social for all participants will conclude the tournament.
Registration forms and fees are due April 4. To register or become a corporate sponsor, contact Paul Shaw at (434) 381-6462 or
