Sweet Briar music students will perform 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4 in Memorial Chapel in the College’s end-of-semester recital. According to Nick Ross, SBC assistant professor of music, the concert will offer something for everyone.
“This is a nice, varied program spanning three centuries that will involve singers, pianists and flutists accompanied by Dr. Rebecca McCord [SBC professor of music],” Ross said of the line-up. “This is a great opportunity to hear fine music.”
The event is open to the public and admission is free.
The following students will perform vocal pieces:
- Carina Finn ’10 – “Vergin, tutto amor” by Francesco Durante.
- Gretchen McDonough ’08 –“Let the Bright Seraphim” from “Samson” by G.F. Handel.
- Elizabeth Schell ’10 – “Del cabello mas sutil” from Fernando Obradors’ “Canciones clasicas espanolas.”
- Katy Johnstone ’10 – “Monica’s Waltz” from Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Medium.”
- Ally Lynch ’10 – Samuel Barber’s “A Slumber Song of the Madonna” from “Ten Early Songs.”
The following students will perform on the piano:
- Victoria Nilsson ‘10 – W.A. Mozart’s “Sonata in C Major (K.545), Allegro, Andante [and] Allegretto grazioso.”
- Jennifer Summerfield ’07 – Mozart’s “Rondo in D (K. 485).”
- Petra Dacheva ’09 – Edvard Grieg’s “Lyric Pieces (Op. 12),” “Waltz,” “Watchman’s Song” and “A Fairy Dance.”
- Allison Taylor ’10 – “Prelude from Suite Bergamasque,’ by Claude Debussy.
- Kathryn Whittemore ’08 – Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Prelude in C-sharp Minor (Op. 3, No. 2).”
Seniors Irene Maslanik and April Miller will each perform flute duos with Frank Coffey, SBC adjunct instructor of music. Maslanik will play J.S. Bach’s “Sonata in E-flat Major, 1st Movement” and “Canonic Sonata No. 6, 1st Movement,” by Thom Ritter George.
Miller will play “Summer Evening (Reverie)” by J.E. Skornicka.
Also accompanied by Coffey, but this time on saxophone, Rosalyn Wheeler ’10 will perform “Allegretto,” by Edmund Hohmann and “Too Blue to Cry,” by Lee West.
