LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Vixens’ swim meet came down to the last race Wednesday at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College as Sweet Briar pulled out the 66-56 victory with a win in the final relay. The win improves Sweet Briar’s overall record to 6-2, while its conference mark moves to 3-2.
With the meet tied 53-53 after the second break, Vixen Victoria Goddard ’09 (Richmond, VA/Westminster Academy) touched the wall first in the 200 Y. individual medley (2:25.62) to give Sweet Briar the 59-56 lead. But the lead was trivial as seven points were up for grabs in the meet’s final and deciding race, the 400 Y. freestyle relay.
Sweet Briar jumped out to a quick lead in the relay as Tori Marshall ’10 (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) and Stephanie Perks ’09 (Warrenton, VA/Falquier) built a sizable lead in the first two legs, followed by Kelsey Jeffers ’07 (Falls Church, VA/Falls Church) and Brittany Carlton ’08 (Warrenton, VA/Highland) who sealed the deal and the meet in the final two legs. The relay team captured the final seven points of the meet with a time of 4:08.59.
Prior to the second break, first-year Hannah Hesser (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) tied the meet with in an exciting first-place finish in the 100 Y. butterfly (1:02.92), edging out the Wildcats’ swimmer at the wall.
Sweet Briar finished first in a total of six races, taking first and second in the 1000 Y. freestyle and the 50 Y. freestyle. Marshall (27.42) and Carlton (27.92) went one and two in the 50 Y. freestyle, while Hesser (11:31.53), and Perks (12:31.92) went one and two in the 1000 Y. freestyle. Hesser led the Vixens with three first-place finishes, winning the 200 Y. butterfly (2:24.70) in addition to the 1000 Y. freestyle and 100 Y. butterfly.
The Vixens are back in action after the Thanksgiving break, traveling to King College Dec. 2 at 11 a.m.
