BALTIMORE, MD — Vixen swimming picked up its first win Sunday, taking the last four events at the College of Notre Dame to defeat the Gators 74-48 in non-conference swimming action.
Sweet Briar went one-two in four races as Kelly Cuddihy ’09 (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) and Jennifer Milby ’08 (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) took first and second, respectively, in the 1000-yard freestyle. First-years Hannah Hesser (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) and Sarah Murphy (Stafford, VA/Brooke Point) finished first and second in the 100-yard backstroke, while Stephanie Perks ’09 (Warrenton, VA/Falquier) and Victoria Goddard ’09 (Richmond, VA/Westminster Academy) took the first two spots in the 500-yard freestyle. In the individual medley event, Cuddihy touched the wall first, followed by Kelsey Jeffers ’07 (Falls Church, VA/Falls Church).
The Vixens also took first in the 100-yard freestyle, the freestyle relay and both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events. First-year Victoria Marshall ’10 (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) won the 100-yard free. In the butterfly races, Goddard took first in the 200 and Hesser took the 100 event. Goddard and Hesser also teamed with Perks and Cuddihy to take first in the freestyle relay.
“We always have a great meet with the College of Notre Dame. Fortunately, this year we were able to pull away with wins in the last four events,” said coach Jason Gallaher. “They raced very well, especially this being the second meet of the weekend.”
On Saturday, the Vixens were defeated by host Randolph-Macon College by the score of 114-79. First-year Hannah Hesser (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) took second in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. She was also swam the butterfly leg of the 200 medley relay, in which Sweet Briar finished second.
Sweet Briar returns home this weekend to take on the Virginia Military Institute and Greensboro College on Saturday. The meet gets underway at 1 p.m.
