On the heals of its first conference win, Vixen soccer played host to conference-foe Guilford College Wednesday, falling 5-0 to the Quakers. The loss drops Sweet Briar’s season record to 3-11 with one contest remaining in the regular season. Guilford’s mark improves to 11-5-1.
The Vixens kept Guilford off the boards for the majority of the first half, surrendering the Quakers’ first goal at 41:14. Up 1-0, the Guilford offense came alive in the second as the Quakers’ shots began to fall. Jenna Carter netted her first at 53:19, followed by Erin Rothweiler at 57:10. After a Micki Boulineau goal at 65:13, Morgan Jones capped Guilford’s scoring at five on a penalty kick score.
Vixen goalie Kristen Johnson '09 (Federal Way, WA/Decatur) turned back 11 shots in the loss.
“Having two starters miss a key game hurts, especially losing a starter during warm-up,” said coach Paul Shaw. “We were well organized defensively for most of the game but had a disastrous spell in the second half where we were outmatched physically. This loss hurts because we feel we are a better team than the score reflects.”
Soccer has one game remaining on its schedule, wrapping up the 2006 season at home this Sunday with Virginia Wesleyan College at 3 p.m.
