Visiting Sewanee scored three in the first half Saturday for the 3-1 win over host Sweet Briar College. Sewanee hit the scoreboard first with a goal from Clare Ashburn in the 1st minute. Sweet Briar answered three minutes later with its own goal from Megan Manubay ’08 (Bear, DE/Caravel).
The score remained tied for some time before Sewanee pulled ahead for good with goals from Julia Anne McKeachie in the 17th minute and Maureen Baptiste as time expired in the half. Claiborne Buckingham assisted both goals. Neither team scored in the second half as Sweet Briar defended eight penalty corners by Sewanee in the half.
Cat Cox ’08 (Prince Frederick, MD/Calverton) and Alex DiFeliceantonio ’08 (Wilmington, NC/Amy Bradley) split time in the cage for Sweet Briar. The two finished with eight and two saves, respectively.
“We showed some uncharacteristic nerves to start the game and that costs us early, but we played a much better second half,” commented coach Jennifer Crispen.
