Independent study art students will exhibit their work Aug. 19 to Oct. 29 in the Benedict Hall Gallery at Sweet Briar College. Pieces will include pastel and charcoal drawings by junior Megan Maloney and Sweet Briar alumna Lauren Banks, and paintings by senior Rachel Reynolds. The artwork was produced this summer with guidance from John Morgan, SBC assistant professor of studio art.
“Four Point Leonine,” by Lauren Banks '06.For Banks, who graduated in May with degrees in biology and anthropology, the independent study was an opportunity to challenge herself creatively. “I tried to push myself out of comfort zones, really strove to add more life and movement into my drawings, and experimented more with the various media,” she said. “I learned that I need to keep doing these things if I ever hope to improve and expand as an artist.”
Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Monday and Friday and 1 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. A reception will be held 4:15 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7 in the Benedict Hall Gallery. Admission to the gallery and reception is free and open to the public.
