SWEET BRIAR — Visiting Christopher Newport University broke a 10-10 tie with 10 seconds remaining Friday, to defeat Sweet Briar 11-10 in non-conference lacrosse action.
The Captains outscored Sweet Briar 5-3 in the first half and pulled ahead 8-3 to start the second. With 18 minutes to play the Vixens’ offense mounted a comeback, scoring five unanswered goals in five minutes to tie the game at eight. Julie Sellers ’06 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) connected on a pass from Sarah Ross Stewart ’08 (Lexington, VA/Virginia Episcopal) to start the comeback. Stewart added two more, followed by an unassisted goal from Sellers. Ellie Donahue ’08 (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) finished the comeback off a pass from Megan Behrle ’09 (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson).
Down 9-10 with less than a minute on the clock, Sweet Briar mounted one last comeback as Stewart carried the ball from midfield and put it passed the goalie to tie the game with 41 seconds to play. But, Christopher Newport’s Kristyn Hankins scored her sixth goal of the game with 10 seconds remaining to hand Sweet Briar the tough 11-10 loss.
Sellers finished with four goals. Stewart and Donahue each put three on the board. Emily Fitzpatrick '07 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) stopped 16 shots between the pipes for Sweet Briar.
The Vixens travel to Lexington tomorrow to take on Washington and Lee at 2 p.m.
