Sweet Briar House and its surrounding gardens will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25 as part of Historic Garden Week. Admission is free.
Located on the campus of Sweet Briar College, the Italianate villa was once the home Indiana Fletcher, founder of the women’s college, and her father, Elijah Fletcher. The center portion of the house was built in the late 18th century and the towers — which give the home its Tuscan flair — were added in 1852.
Home to the college president, Sweet Briar House is furnished with many original and period pieces. Its gardens are equally impressive with 150-year-old American boxwoods and many native and exotic trees, including weeping hemlock, Chinese chestnuts, catalpa, black walnut, Chinese varnish trees and others.
Sweet Briar House will be open to the public on Tuesday, April 25.For more information, contact the Sweet Briar Museum at (434) 381-6246.
