SWEET BRIAR – Krystal Ellis ’08 (Rustburg, VA/Rustburg) pitched the program's first no-hitter as Sweet Briar took both games of a doubleheader with Randolph-Macon Woman’s College by scores of 1-0 and 10-1.
Sweet Briar broke open the 1-1 tie in the third inning of game two with four hits and three runs. Megan Combs ’09 (Churchville, VA/Fort Defiance) doubled and scored on a Brittney Berry ’09 (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) double. After a long out by Meagan Chenault ’07 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County), Ellis picked up the two-out RBI, knocking in Berry with a double. Meagan Bell ’09 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) followed with a single to score Ellis.
The Vixens' offense continued in the fourth inning as Berry knocked in Stephanie Sperling ’07 (Suffolk, VA/Western Branch) and Combs with her second double of the game. Chenault followed with her own RBI double and Ellis drove in Chenault. Beth Anderson ’08 (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) drove in Sweet Briar’s ninth and tenth runs of the game with a single to right center.
With the no-hitter on the line, Ellis got a strikeout, a foul out and a groundout to end the game. She gave up one unearned run in five innings and struck out eight. The lefty was 2-3 in the game with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Annie Johnson scored the WildCats’ lone run in the game. She led off the game by reaching second on an error, stole third and scored on a wild throw from the catcher.
Sweet Briar took game one with a run in its last at bat. Sperling reached on an error to lead off the Vixen half of the seventh and came around to score the game’s only run on a game-winning fielder’s choice by K.C. Ellis '08 (Los Angeles, CA/A.R. Miller). Anderson pitched a complete-game shutout for Sweet Briar as she held R-MWC to just two hits.
Berry was 4-5 at the plate for the day with two doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs. Combs finished 1-3 with two runs scored.
Sweet Briar’s next contest is Saturday at home against Rappahannock Community College at 1 p.m.
