SWEET BRIAR — Sweet Briar batted around in the second inning of game two on its way to a 9-4 win over visiting Guilford College. The win is the first of the season for the Vixens and the team’s first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory.
All nine Vixen runs in game two crossed in the first two innings. Sweet Briar took an early 2-0 lead thanks to a first inning home run from Krystal Ellis ’08 (Rustburg, VA/Rustburg). The Vixens then batted around in the second to cushion their lead.
Natalie Cutchin ’09 (Windsor, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) started the inning with a walk. Stephanie Sperling ’07 (Suffolk, VA/Western Branch) followed, reaching on an error. With runners on the corners, Megan Combs ’09 (Churchville, VA/Fort Defiance) singled to drive in Cutchin. Meagan Chenault ’07 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) followed with an RBI single and stole second. After a walk and an out, Meagan Bell ’09 (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) knocked in two runs. Cutchin, who began the inning with a walk, came up with two outs and runners in scoring position. She singled but was thrown out trying to advance to second. Two runs scored on the play, capping the seven-run inning. Ellis went the distance for Sweet Briar, surrendering an earned run on eight hits and striking out four.
In game one, the Quakers erased a one-run Vixen lead in the sixth inning, scoring three unearned runs for the win. Sweet Briar used three different pitchers in the 5-3 loss.
Sweet Briar continues conference play Sunday, traveling to Roanoke to take on the Maroons at 2 p.m.
