SWEET BRIAR — Sweet Briar softball held visiting Eastern Mennonite University to two runs Wednesday, falling 2-0 to the Royals in the second game of a doubleheader. Eastern Mennonite took game one 11-0.
Down 2-0 in the sixth inning of game two, Sweet Briar got a leadoff triple from Brittney Berry ’09 (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) but was unable to knock her in. Pitcher Krystal Ellis ’08 (Rustburg, VA/Rustburg) went seven innings for the loss, striking out eight batters and walking none. Strong defensive play by the Vixens helped strand four Royals on the base paths.
Eastern Mennonite scored 11 runs on nine hits in game one. Berry picked up the loss on the mound for Sweet Briar. Natasha Viafora and Jamie Fraysher picked up wins for the Royals. Brooke McCormick led Eastern Mennonite at the plate, going three for six with three doubles, four runs scored and one RBI.
Sweet Briar faces Guilford in conference action Saturday at home. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
