SWEET BRIAR – Sweet Briar lacrosse came up two goals short Tuesday, falling 9-7 to visiting Roanoke College.
The two teams traded goals throughout the game, as neither was able to gain a solid lead. The Maroons got on the board first with a free-position goal in the fifth minute. Sweet Briar answered with its first goal in the 13th minute as Bethany Bressan ’08 (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s Belfield) scored on a Lisa Mollica ’06 (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge) pass. The lead went back and forth the remainder of the half, capped by a Roanoke goal with 22 seconds to tie the game at 5-5. The Vixens pulled ahead 6-5 early in the second but Roanoke answered with two quick goals to capture the 7-6 lead. The game was tied again at 22:41 as Bressan found the net on a free-position shot for Sweet Briar. The Maroons finished with two goals and held off several late offensive attacks by the Vixens for the win.
Goalie Emily Fitzpatrick '07 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) stopped 14 shots in the game, including three free-position shots by the Maroons. Kally Perkins led the Maroons with two goals and an assist.
