SWEET BRIAR — The Vixens of Sweet Briar College lost both games of a doubleheader Monday with visiting non-conference Southern Virginia University by scores of 5-2 and 10-0.
In Game One, Pitcher Krystal Ellis ’08 (Rustburg, VA/Rustburg) put Sweet Briar on top 1-0 in the first inning with her third home run of the season. The slim Vixen lead held for four innings, helped by five strike outs by Ellis.
The Knights bats came alive in the fifth, scoring three runs on a three-run home run by Katasha Veazie. Southern Virginia scored an additional run in each of the last two innings for the 5-2 win. Ellis finished with six strike outs and no walks. First-year Meagan Bell (Amherst, VA/Amherst County) was two for three with a double and a run scored. Megan Combs ’09 (Churchville, VA/Fort Defiance) also picked up an RBI in the game.
The Knights’ bats stayed hot in game two as Southern Virginia scored 10 runs. Right fielder K.C. Ellis ’08 (Los Angeles, CA/A.R. Miller) played well in the field for Sweet Briar, snagging three fly balls. Pitcher Brittney Berry ’09 (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) went 2-3 at the plate.
Sweet Briar continues its home schedule Wednesday, facing Eastern Mennonite in a conference game at 2 p.m.
