SWEET BRIAR — Sweet Briar lacrosse scored 13 goals in the first half on its way to a 15-7 win over visiting Averett University Thursday. With the win the Vixens improve to 3-2 on the season.
Sweet Briar dominated the draw control early in the first half, jumping out to a quick 7-1 lead in the first 10 minutes. First-year Meredith Newman (Charlottesville, VA/Tandem) started the offense in the third minute, connecting on a pass from fellow first-year Megan Behrle (Manassas, VA/Stonewall Jackson). Bethany Bressan ’08 (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s Belfield) and Julie Sellers ’06 (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) followed with goals at 3:18 and 3:30.
Sweet Briar scored four more unanswered goals in the half before Averett found the net in the eighth minute. The Vixens responded, finishing with six goals to bring the scored to 13-2 at break. Sellers, Bressan and Sarah Ross Stewart (Lexington, VA/Virginia Episcopal) each finished the first frame with three goals scored.
Averett made the game interesting in the second as the Vixen defense surrendered five goals. Kaylee Black scored twice and Darcie Jones scored her third and fourth goals of the game to pull the Cougars within seven. The seven goal deferential was as close as the Cougars could get. Senior Jenn Wiley (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) scored her first goal of the season with eight minutes remaining, followed by Stewart’s fourth goal of the game.
Sweet Briar travels to Ashland Saturday to face Randolph-Macon at 1 p.m.
