Sweet Briar – Sweet Briar lacrosse suffered a 12-7 loss at the hands of Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday, in the Vixens’ first home game of the season.
Down 3-0 late in the first half, senior Julie Sellers (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) found the net twice to bring Sweet Briar within one at the break.
The Vixens continued their strong play to open the second, tying the game on a Sarah Ross Stewart ’08 (Lexington, VA/Virginia Episcopal) goal one minute into the half. But the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins answered, scoring four goals in five minutes to pull back ahead 7-3. In the remaining 20 minutes, Sweet Briar scored three times, but each was answered by a Virginia Wesleyan goal.
Ellie Donahue ’08 (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal), Sellers and Stewart each scored twice for the Vixens. Junior Chrissy Clancy, who finished with three goals and three assists, led the Marlins.
“The team showed that we are there to compete,” coach Missy Ackerman said. “We were several turnovers away from forcing the game to be played out differently.”
Sweet Briar looks for its first victory of the season Wednesday on the road against Hollins.
