Sweet Briar College will present a series of art talks coinciding with the exhibit “Sight and Insight, A Survey of Art History, from the Sweet Briar College Collection.” The exhibit is on view in the Anne Gary Pannell Art Gallery.
Presented in the Pannell Gallery, the short, informal art talks will begin with coffee from 10 to 10:30 a.m. in the back foyer of the art gallery, followed by a lecture from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
The series begins Wednesday, Feb. 22, with lectures by John Goulde, professor of religion and art history major Kate Feiss ’06. Goulde’s lecture is titled “The Far East” and Feiss will talk about African masks.
On Wednesday, March 1, SBC professor of art Tracy Hamilton will present “The Image of Women in the Renaissance.”
Christopher Witcombe, an art history professor, will address “Old Master, Baroque and 18th-Century Prints” on Friday, March 3.
Laura Pharis, professor of studio art, will present her lecture, “Someday My Prints Will Come” on Monday, March 6. Pharis’ lecture — the only one in the series that will not be held in the gallery — will be held in the Babcock Fine Arts Center Studio Room 031 on the ground floor.
On Wednesday, March 22, Witcombe returns, accompanied by Christian Carr, assistant professor of arts management. Carr will speak on 19th-century American art, and Witcombe’s lecture is titled “Seeing and Looking, Vision and Perception, and the Notion of Art.”
The series concludes Monday, March 27, with art history instructor Kathleen Placidi and Rebecca Massie Lane, director of the Sweet Briar College art gallery. Placidi will talk about art in the 20th century and Lane’s lecture is titled “Contemporary Women Artists.”
