The second-annual Friends of Athletics (FOAth) Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, May 5 at the Poplar Grove Golf Club, 380 London Lane. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Sweet Briar College athletic program.
This captain’s choice tournament will feature a hole-in-one car give-away sponsored by Amherst Motors, beat the “pro” competition, a putting contest, and golf carts equipped with Global Positioning Systems.
Golfers can enter the tournament as individuals or as a team of four. Registration fees are $150 for individuals and $550 for teams. Fees include golf, cart, boxed lunch, social, prizes, and FOAth membership.
Corporate sponsorship opportunities are also available. Eagle partners receive free entry of one team (4 players) into the tournament. Eagle and Birdie Partners will have their logos featured on golf carts’ GPS screens as golfers approach the tee.
Poplar Grove Golf Club, recently listed No. 8 in the category of Best New Upscale Public by Golf Digest, challenges golfers of all levels. The Sam Snead design features 18 holes of bent grass greens, tees and fairways with rolling hills, natural water sources and mountain views.
Friends of Athletics is comprised of alumnae, parents and friends who donate and raise funds to help offset operational costs and assist in further developing Sweet Briar’s seven varsity teams.
Tournament play begins May 5 with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. A social for all participants will conclude the tournament.
Registration forms and fees are due April 5. To register or become a corporate sponsor, contact Paul Shaw at (434) 381-6462 or
