Sweet Briar College wrapped up Brownie Science Try-It Day 2006 on Saturday, Jan. 21, hosting 91 Brownie Girl Scouts working toward their Try-It badges. The girls represented seven troops from Lynchburg, Fincastle and Amherst County.
Try-It Day is a service project of the local chapter of Iota Sigma Pi, a national honor society for women chemists. Volunteers from SBC, Lynchburg College and Randolph-Macon Woman’s College organized and led hands-on science activities based on the Girl Scout handbook.
“We had 36 volunteers — a terrific mix of folks this year,” said program coordinator Jill Granger, SBC professor of chemistry. “We’ve always had nominal participation from all three colleges, but [this year] was record-breaking in the extent to which we had tri-college participation. This was the first time that we had a one-third, one-third, one-third split among the volunteers. Which was great!”
