SWEET BRIAR, VA – Sweet Briar took eight events from Hollins Wednesday but could not pull out the win, falling 115-138 in a home ODAC meet. The meet finishes Sweet Briar’s home season and was the last meet in the Vixen pool for seniors Leigh Darrell (Chestertown, MD/Queen Anne’s County) and Joanna Meade (King George, VA/King George).
Sweet Briar got off the blocks strong, as the 200 M. medley relay team of Jennifer Milby ’08 (Mechanicsville,VA/Lee-Davis), Kelly Cuddihy ’09 (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette), Sarah Hall ’09 (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale), and Sara Garrett (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond River) took first with a time of 2:25.13. The Vixens and Hollins then alternated wins in the next six events with Sweet Briar finishing first in the 200 M. freestyle, the 100 M. breaststoke and the 50 M. freestyle. Down 60-66 after the first break, Sweet Briar captured the first three races to pull ahead 92-89 with four events remaining. Hollins finished first in three of those final four events to claim the win.
Cuddihy took three individual events and one relay to lead Sweet Briar. She finished first in the 200 M individual medley (2:46.96) and both the 100 M. breaststroke (1:26.68) and the 200 M. breaststroke (3:07.46). Milby touched the wall first in the 200 M. freestyle (2:28.24) and the 200 M. backstroke (2:43.40) in addition to her relay win. Hall and Kate Lydin went one and two in the 50 M. freestyle.
The Vixens resume their competitions after winter break, when they travel to Greensboro to take on Greensboro and Guilford College Jan. 21.
