In late October, the Sweet Briar tennis courts received major work as part one of a two-phase project. Phase one saw seven courts, located behind the Daisy Williams Gymnasium, resurfaced with a two-inch asphalt overlay. The retaining wall between courts four and five was redone and the fence separating the two courts is scheduled for an overhaul in the near future. The newly surfaced courts will be colored when warm weather returns this spring, just in time to open the tennis season on new courts.
Phase two will began in early June and will involve the renovation of the three lake tennis courts. Extensive work will be done to rebuild the courts in time for summer programs.
The completion of the second phase will give Sweet Briar 14 beautiful outdoor tennis courts, one of the finest tennis facilities in the southern region, and will return Sweet Briar’s tennis facility to the quality that brought two national tournaments and several Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championships to campus.
In early September, new blinds were hung in the gymnasium and the arched windows were tinted to cut down on the glare in the gym during volleyball, badminton and fencing.
Construction on the new softball field continues. Steady progress over the last year has the field on schedule to be ready when the Vixens make their ODAC debut this spring. The last few months have brought the construction of the backstop, new cold-weather grass in the outfield and the pouring of concrete for the batting cage. Once the outfield fence and scoreboard are installed all that will be left is to line the field and play ball.
