LEXINGTON, VA -- Eighth-seeded Sweet Briar College was knocked out of the postseason Saturday, falling to top-seeded Washington and Lee University 4-1 in quarterfinal action of the ODAC tournament. The game was the last game played in a Sweet Briar uniform for Vixens Julie Drake ’06 (San Jose, CA/Willow Glen), Jenn Wiley ’06 (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown), Paula Kirkland ’06 (Glen Allen, VA/St. Gertrudes), and Michelle Badger ’06 (Plymouth, MA/Plymouth South).
The Vixens played well as a team to hold the Generals scoreless for the first 21 minutes of play until Washington and Lee scored twice to take the two-goal lead at the break. After a Generals’ goal to start the second, Kirkland cut the gap back to two with a goal at 47:49. Washington and Lee answered late in the game to take the 4-1 win.
“The measure of improvement this season is not going to show up in the wins and losses, but it shows up on the field,” commented coach Jennifer Crispen. Sweet Briar ended the year with a 4-14 record and 1-7 mark in the ODAC.
Wiley turned back a season-high 25 shots in her last game. She moved into the lead as both the conference and Division III career saves leader this season. Wiley’s record stands at 1042 career saves after today’s game.
