BRIDGEWATER, VA – Sweet Briar field hockey wrapped up the regular season Thursday shutting out Hood College 4-0 at Bridgewater College. The win improves the Vixens’ record to 4-13 for the season as they head into the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament this weekend.
First-year Kelly Sault (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) picked up her first goal of the season with two minutes to play in the first half, giving Sweet Briar the 1-0 lead at break. Sault added another in the second as Sweet Briar dominated the half. Senior Julie Drake (San Jose, CA/Willow Glen) scored on a penalty stroke at 42:22 and Maddie Lyerly ’09 (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) scored Sweet Briar’s fourth and final goal on a penalty corner at 57:23, connecting on a pass from Ellie Donahue ’08 (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) corner.
The Vixens took 13 penalty corners to Hood’s eight and out shot the Blazers 24-10. Jenn Wiley ’06 (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) picked up four saves in the game to finish the regular season with 238. Drake led the team with nine goals scored this season.
Sweet Briar opens the ODAC tournament Saturday at Washington and Lee University. They take on the top-seeded Washington and Lee Generals at 5 p.m.
