SWEET BRIAR – Sweet Briar soccer wrapped up the 2005 season Tuesday with a 2-0 loss to visiting Lynchburg College. With the loss, the Vixens end the year 4-12-1. The win stops a two-game skid for Lynchburg to pull their season record to 13-3-2.
Both goals scored by the Hornets came in the first half. Melanie Chidester put Lynchburg on the board in the 2nd minute, connecting on a pass from Christina DiLiddo. Chidester found the goal once more at 17:25 to give Lynchburg the 2-0 lead at the break.
The Vixen defense held off numerous Lynchburg attacks in the second half, including five corner kicks. With just over three minutes remaining in the game, Kristen Johnson ’09 (Federal Way, WA/Decatur) stopped her third penalty kick of the season to keep the score at 2-nil. Johnson ’09 picked up 11 saves in the game to finish at the top in the conference with 175 saves on the season.
“We are really happy with today’s effort,” said coach Paul Shaw after the game. “The team kept its shape very well. They battled and competed with one of the best teams in the conference.”
