SWEET BRIAR, VA – Senior Melanie Bartnek’s goal with 5:08 remaining in the first overtime period gave visiting Roanoke College the 2-1 win Friday in ODAC action. The loss drops the Vixens’ conference record to 1-7; Roanoke improves to 2-7.
After a scoreless first, Sweet Briar took the 1-0 lead when Paula Kirkland '06 (Glen Allen, VA/St. Gertrudes) connected on a pass from Julie Drake '06 (San Jose, CA/Willow Glen) with 24:32 left to play. The Vixens looked set to pick up the win until Roanoke was awarded a penalty stroke with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. Kelly Miller scored on the stroke to tie the game for Roanoke and force the game into overtime.
“That was the most competitive they have played in a long time,” said coach Jennifer Crispen. “Sometimes hockey is a game of inches.”
Sweet Briar travels to Bridgewater this Thursday to face Hood at 4 p.m. The Vixens will open the ODAC tournament on the road Oct. 29 against the highest seed.
Overall: 3-13, ODAC: 1-7
