SWEET BRIAR, VA – Senior Julie Drake’s (San Jose, CA/Willow Glen) hat trick helped lead Sweet Briar College to a 6-1 win over Randolph-Macon Woman’s College Tuesday in ODAC action. The victory is the first conference win of the season for the Vixens and keeps the Hill City Cup at Sweet Briar for the second straight year.
Sweet Briar put four on the board in the first half as senior Paula Kirkland (Glen Allen, VA/St. Gertrudes) got the offense started, scoring an unassisted goal at 11:39. Drake followed with back-to-back goals and first-year Nicole Jackson (Dover, DE/Smyrna) scored her first career goal to give Sweet Briar the 4-0 lead. The Wildcats’ Jennifer Leonard cut the lead to three at the half, with a penalty shot goal with 48 seconds remaining.
The Vixens’ offense continued in the second. Sarah Goldstein ’09 (Richmond, VA/Trinity Episcopal) found the cage for her first career goal at 47:54 and Drake finished the Vixens’ scoring, tallying her third of the game off a penalty corner at 48:40. Jenn Wiley (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) and the Sweet Briar defense held of several penalty corners in the last few minutes to preserve the 6-1 victory.
“We finally saw some results on offense,” remarked coach Jennifer Crispen after the win.
Sweet Briar travels to the University of Mary Washington tomorrow to face the Eagles at 4 p.m.
