SWEET BRIAR, VA – Kristen McCartney’s goal with 7:19 to play in the first overtime period, gave visiting Averett University the 3-2 win Sunday in non-conference action. With the loss, Sweet Briar drops to 4-10-1 on the season; Averett evens its record at 7-7.
Averett jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead at 1:24, but Sweet Briar answered four minutes later with a goal of its own as Erin Coyne '08(Rockville, VA/Patrick Henry) connected off a through-pass from Whitney Shaffer ’08 (Norfolk, VA/Maury)to pick up her second goal of the season.
The second half started much like the first, with Averett scoring in the first five minutes of play. The Vixens answered once again with a goal from first-year Kostayne Link (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) to tie the score at 2-2 and push the game into overtime. McCartney's overtime goal was her third of the game.
“We were delt a bad hand before the game started and our players really deserved a better outcome for the amount of effort they put into the game,” commented coach Paul Shaw about the overtime loss.
Soccer returns to conference action this Wednesday, traveling to North Carolina to take on Guilford College at 4:30 p.m.
