SWEET BRIAR, VA – Visiting Washington and Lee University handed Sweet Briar a 3-0 loss in hockey Thursday afternoon in ODAC action. The loss drops the Vixens’ record to 2-9 on the season. The Generals improve to 7-5 overall.
The game remained scoreless for almost 25 minutes as both teams traded possession often. Senior Jane Beall broke the tie at 24:25 followed by freshman Alden Wicker’s unassisted goal with 26 seconds remaining in the half to give Washington and Lee the 2-0 lead at the break. Junior Amy Volkmann led the Generals in points, scoring in the 37th minute and assisting Beall’s goal.
Jenn Wiley ’06 (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) notched 17 saves as Washington and Lee took 26 shots in the game. Wiley and the Vixen defense held the Generals scoreless off penalty corner despite defending against 15 corners in the game. First-year Blair Sutton (Richmond, VA/Steward) and sophomore Cat Cox (Prince Frederick, MD/Calverton) were key players in Sweet Briar’s defense.
Sweet Briar takes a breather from conference play over the weekend, facing Transylvania at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sewanee Sunday at 2 p.m.
