ROANOKE, VA – Three first-years scored Wednesday, helping Sweet Briar defeat host Hollins University 3-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action. The win is Sweet Briar’s first conference victory of the season and boosts the Vixens’ overall record to 4-5-1.
Hollins got on the board halfway through the first half, but the Vixens answered with two before the break. First-year Kostayne Link (Roanoke, Va/Patrick Henry) connected in the 27th minute off a corner kick from Whitney Shaffer ’08 (Norfolk, VA/Maury) to tie the game and Bethany Magee ’09 (Prince George, Va/Prince George) gave Sweet Briar the lead with an unassisted goal in the 39th minute. First-year Anna Tarnoff (Fairfield, IA/M.S.A.E.) picked up her second goal in as many games in the second half, sealing the win for the Vixens.
“Hollins played a very spirited game,” coach Paul Shaw said. “We were a little flat, but we battled for the win.”
Sweet Briar is on the road again this Saturday, traveling to Bridgewater to take on the Eagles at 1 p.m.
