Sweet Briar College students, staff and faculty contributed more than $4,000 in a fund-raising drive initiated just after Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Donations also included water, diapers and other non-perishable goods.
Contributions were collected in a “lifeboat” installed in the Prothro Atrium for one week. Funds also were raised through a walk hosted by Circle-K.
“What a testament to the compassion of the Sweet Briar Community,” said Guy Brewer, chaplain of the college.
The cash donations will be directed to the American Red Cross. The supplies will be added to an area-wide collection that includes local churches, schools and businesses.
“We will deliver the hurricane supplies to Miller-Motte Technical College,” said Brewer. “Then they will be taken from there by relief organizations.”
Student, staff and faculty volunteers also participated in a community service project for the past two weeks making hats and scarves for Katrina victims who were displaced to areas with cold climates.
It is still possible to donate to the relief efforts. Contributions can be sent directly to the American Red Cross at 2700 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg, Va., 24501.
