SWEET BRIAR, VA – Senior Paula Kirkland’s goal with six minutes to play wiped off the shutout, but could not prevent the loss, as Sweet Briar fell 5-1 to Virginia Wesleyan in the their home opener. With the loss, Sweet Briar moves to 1-3 on the season; Virginia Wesleyan improves to 4-1 overall.
The Marlins kept the ball on Sweet Briar’s side most of the game. Laura Weidema scored back-to-back goals in first, giving Virginia Wesleyan the 2-0 lead at break. Megan May continued the scoring in the second, adding two goals to her two first-half assists.
Senior keeper Jenn Wiley (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) made 21 saves on 38 shots, upping her season total to 67.
Sweet Briar looks for a win at home on Wednesday. They take on non-conference Christopher Newport University at 4:30 p.m.
