Interior designer and design theorist Paula Heneveld will give a gallery talk Thursday, Sept. 15, at 4:30 p.m. in Benedict Gallery, in conjunction with her exhibit, “Ancient Wisdoms and Natural Actions at Akrotiri, 1500 BC.”
The exhibit contains photographs of archaeological remains of Akrotiri, a town in Greece that was buried in volcanic ash from an eruption 3,500 years ago.
“The purpose of the exhibition is to introduce viewers to the design principles of interiors at Akrotiri,” said Heneveld, an interior designer and former teacher. “The photographs show advanced aesthetic and technical accomplishments in the creation of the built environment and also evidence cultural appreciation for feminine being.”
Heneveld was an interior designer at the architectural firms of Skidmore Owings and Merrill, Chicago, and Stahl/Bennett Architects, Boston, and has worked as in independent interior designer in Savannah, Ga., Richmond, Va., and now Amherst, Va. She earned her Bachelor of Science in interior design from the University of Michigan and a Master of Arts with a concentration in behavior aspects of design, interior design, from Cornell University. She has taught interior design at numerous universities and art schools on the East Coast including the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and Virginia Commonwealth University. The exhibition is supported, in part, by a VCU Grant-In-Aid for Faculty.
The exhibition runs through Oct. 30 in Benedict Hall Gallery. Exhibit hours are noon to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 5 p.m. Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
