ASHLAND, Va. – Sweet Briar scored first, Saturday, but could not hold off the Yellow Jackets as Randolph-Macon defeated the Vixens 4-2. The loss evens Sweet Briar’s overall record at 1-1.
Senior Paula Kirkland (Glen Allen, VA/St. Gertrudes) got the Vixens on the board in the first, with an unassisted goal at 29:01. Sweet Briar continued to pressure the Macon defense but could not put one in, finishing the half down 2-1.
After another goal by Randolph-Macon to start the second half, Kirkland scored again to bring Sweet Briar back within one. The Vixens were on the defense most of the second half defending 12 shots from the Yellow Jackets. Keeper Jenn Wiley (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) finished with 22 saves. First-year Maddie Lyerly (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) picked up a defensive save.
"We are a young team and we are going to make mistakes. All in all, there was some great play and I am pleased with that," said coach Jennifer Crispen after the game.
Sweet Briar continues road play, September 14 at Bridgewater College.
