Sweet Briar made improvements throughout the match Thursday, but came up short in their home opener with Averett University, losing 10-30, 11-30, 18-30 to the Cougars. Senior Nicole Traylor (King William, VA/King William) and first-year Rebecca Martin (Charleston, WV/Capital City) played will defensively for the Vixens. As a team, Sweet Briar picked up six service aces.

The Vixens travel to tournaments the next two weekends. They open conference play September 13 at home against Roanoke.
