WINSTON-SALEM, NC – First-year midfielder Bethany Magee (Prince George, VA/Prince George) scored twice and picked up one assist as Sweet Briar kicked off its season shutting out Salem College 4-0 on the road.
Magee put the Vixens on the board in the 10th minute. She wrapped up the scoring in the second half, netting Sweet Briar’s fourth goal in the 85th minute. First-year Kostayne Link (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) and sophomore Erin Coyne (Rockville, VA/Patrick Henry) each added one. Claire Carson ’08 (Houston, TX/Memorial) played well off the bench for the defense, helping keeper Kristen Johnson ’09 (Federal Way, WA/Decatur) pick up her first career shutout.
“This was a typical first game,” commented coach Paul Shaw after the win. “There were things we did well and things we need to improve on. Key areas of our game must be addressed if we are going to be competitive in our conference.”
Sweet Briar travels to Randolph-Macon Woman’s College this weekend for the R-MWC Soccer Classic Tournament. The Vixens are slated to take on Catholic and Mary Baldwin.
